Protective Walls

January 7, 2001

The glass walls stood around him,
He could look out
None could look in
He preferred it that way

He saw her as she walked by
She did not see him
He waved at her
She did not wave back

He pondered these walls he built
He deliberated his use of protection
He resolved to change his world
But could he smash this glass

His world was cold and sober
A hidden life within itŐs own
He was afraid to share his soul
Terrified of losing his choices

His frame of mind a box
His nature something wild
His heart in a hollow cube
Panic encased his mind

But he broke the glass with a gesture
A wave of his hand
A smile on his lips
Pieces of his boundaries lay about

But still she did not wave
She did not hear the shattered glass
Her world was enclosed also
For her deafness shut her out

But he pushed forth
He stepped in her path
And he spoke as though she could listen
And listen she did

Her heart heard his heart
His soul found herŐs
They were fearful at first
But now they learn with courage

The same path is not always taken
The direction not always together
But they listen with knowledge in mind
And grow with hope in their worlds.
